A look at Hyland changes and the road ahead
Just over 18 months ago, Hyland Software laid off several hundred employees. Within months, new leadership from the outside was put into place and this year we saw additional leadership positions removed or modified. For years it has been common to have familiar faces moving in and out of leadership at Hyland, for better or for worse.
But with fresh perspectives coming from the outside, there has been a renewed hope that Hyland would return to its innovative roots – something that would require significant changes and a lot of effort. A clear roadmap with built-in accountability was a must, as too often vision with poor follow-through and hype without significant action had left some with jaded views and pessimism.
Hyland presents a clear vision for the future
This week at Hyland’s annual CommunityLIVE conference, Hyland unveiled a bold plan to move back into the position of market leadership they once held. This plan was revealed directly by the new leadership and included a detailed roadmap — something never done before at this event or on this scale.
CPO Leonard Kim laid out a very clear structure to align products into a single track with an overarching theme repeated many times — Hyland will meet you where you are. (For more on exactly what was revealed, see the Hyland press release.)
For some, it may have been difficult to not see past the AI integration and intelligent processing features being unveiled as part of an integrated platform. But for others, KeyMark included, the commitment we saw to enhance the core product line with a clear strategy and transparent KPI’s has created some level of excitement about what could be.
As partners of Hyland for 27 years and counting, we have witnessed first-hand the growth of the company and have grown along with them. It’s thanks to this lasting partnership and shared success that we feel we have a unique perspective to share regarding these announcements.
So, what is our take? Is this the new Hyland? Is the Hyland of the past truly in the past? Is the windshield bigger than the rearview mirror? While it’s too early to say for sure, there are some signs that would indicate that this could be for real.
Signs that Hyland is evolving up
First, there is a real sense of determination and top-down alignment that feels legitimate. From tone and body language to early-stage demos and invitations to beta-test, there is evidence that these ambitious updates might just happen. After all, you don’t share your roadmap containing actual dates with the masses if you aren’t willing to be held accountable.
There is also a real energy from the employees that has not been present for some time. In past years, the unsure smile and nod responses from Hylanders were easy to see through – like the feigned excitement you give a gift giver to make them feel better after receiving another pair of jean shorts. Now, the excitement is clearly genuine rather than a façade.
Finally, in speaking with different leadership at Hyland, there is unity, clarity of message, and a focus on shared vision that is reassuring. For a period, and due to a variety of reasons, it seemed Hyland had lost a level of focus. But by planting a flag and laying out a plan of action with real performance indicators, Hyland leadership provides confidence that the road ahead leads to a new Hyland and a brighter future for customers.
